1989年結成以降、中心人物である不破大輔を除き離合集散を繰り返しながら、現在も活動を続ける孤高の世界的ビッグバンド「渋さ知らズオーケストラ」。フリージャズを基調としつつ、ダンサー、役者などが舞台を彩り、総勢30人を超える熱狂的かつカオスなステージは唯一無二だ。本作は、不破自身がその原点や印象深いエピソードを語るとともに、黎明期の元メンバーたちがこのバンドで過ごした時間と演奏を振り返りつつ、謎に包まれた「渋さ知らズ」の実像に迫るドキュメンタリーである。
元メンバーでもある佐々木彩子が、ナビゲーターとして渋谷毅、林栄一、のなか悟空、加藤崇之、山本精一、不破大輔らジャズ・アバンギャルドシーンのレジェンドたちと対話を重ね、彼らとその場でセッションを繰り広げるのは本作の見どころのひとつ。監督を務めたのは、2019年に音楽史に名高い京都大学西部講堂での「渋さ知らズオーケストラ〜天幕講堂渋さ西部大祭」を記録した佐藤訪米。渋さ知らズ結成当時から不破と交流を続け、30年の歳月を経て遂にこのドキュメンタリーに結実した。
「渋さ知らズ」とは何か―？ それはひいては集団とは、個とは、自由とは、愛とは何かを問うことでもある。夢こそまこと、消えてはあらわれ、そして何度でも生まれる「渋さ知らズ」≒不破大輔が、探求し続ける音楽と生き方を是非、見届けて欲しい。
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
京大西部講堂におけるライブ撮影に始まった今回の作品は、不破大輔さん、佐々木彩子さん、私と、三者の視点をあわせて渋さ知らズの軌跡をふり返るとともに、次なる“渋さ”の展望を垣間見たものです。ミュージシャンたちは撮影当時のコロナ渦、ライブ活動もままならない状況でした。ライブハウスはもちろん、飲食業や劇場をはじめ、ほとんどの業種において厳しい時期だった。皆が皆、生活することを脅かされていたのです。私たちが表現できることはなにか。それはなりふり構わず「生きる」ということでした。すなわち“ライブ”です。すべての生きる人々に忘れて欲しくない一瞬です。

Shibusashirazu Orchestra is an internationally acclaimed big band that plays diverse styles of music from free jazz to rock, folk and pop music, combined with performance arts such as butoh dancers and Dragon Performance. This documentary covers 30 years of the band’s history, with never-seen-before concert footage interwoven with interviews with Daisuke Fuwa, the band’s organizer, and other legendary musicians who share fascinating stories.
The film begins with chaotic but exciting footage of their Kyoto University Seibu-Kodo Auditorium performance in 2019. Then Ayako Sasaki, a former band member, talks and/or jams with Fuwa, and founding members. Also interviewed are people associated with the band. The conversations reveal Shibusashirazu’s uniqueness as a loosely connected community where individuality is respected, asking its audience a fundamental question “What is freedom?” Seibu-Kodo of Kyoto University is the space of autonomy spirit where The Police, XTC, Tom Waits and Frank Zappa had played.If the Skatalites had met Sun Ra
…playing the repertoire of Frank Zappa as well as Fletcher Henderson then the result mayhave sounded like Shibusashirazu Orchestra. Kinetic, theatrical and spectacular – Shibusashirazu’ electrifying shows are an experience like no other.
Shibusashirazu (SHEE-BOO-SAH SHEE-RAH-ZOO) is a Japanese phrase meaning “Never be cool”. As the name says, the band doesn’t stay within the “cool” frame of jazz big bands. Although based on free jazz featuring improvisation, its music reaches over into romantic Japanese “kayo(pop)” songs, rock, funk, ska, Latin, trance and Balkan beats.
Hailing from Japan, the ensemble is a shifting community of players, and the numbers vary from 20 to 40, often with a substantial horn section sending some of the arrangements right off the Richter scale and into deepest, but brightest space. The ethos is taken seriously by founder and conductor Daisuke Fuwa, who has brought together players from “Tokyo Avant-Garde”, classical, jazz and punk scenes to perform under his riotous marquee. In fact, Shibusashirazu’ commitment to the dramatic arts has seen the band bring in a number of actors, Go-Go dancers, Butoh dancers and performance artists to give an intensely theatrical edge to concerts that have been the talk of major European festivals like Glastonbury, Moers, Roccella, Nantes, Quebec, Molde, North Sea and San Sebastian.NEVER MIND DA SHIBUSASHIRAZU EXODUS 渋さ知らズ 番外地篇
